IP messed up File Extensions[?]
Which one is this

Since installing the new IP it has made a mess with some of my file extenstions. I have files that I don't know what they are or what they were. For example I have tried to find out on the Net what these ones were for: SAM-Sam File,
.4taskbandtoolbar there are a lot of others. One that puzzles me most is when I go to view Folder Options/File Types the very first one sits on top of the list and can't be changed, it has a default icon and as file type just has File, now that was not there befor. I can't do a thing to it, if I click Advanced and choose a program to open it nothing happens and none of the other buttons will work to do anything to this particular file.
Is there a program of some sort that can fix this type of problem?
Finding what certain file extensions are is one thing and doesn't help me much as it has a variety of programs that use them. For example my SAM File is in the GIMP Program and the icon is Gimp but the extension SAM File is just not Right, or it was not there in that form before. It should be a GIMP Plugi-In. But now I have the SAM file in other places. If I try to change it for one program it won't work for another. It has me really baffled.
If anyone understood what I wrote I would be most grateful for help.

the one's dealing with the IP issue may notice more if you can edit your title to something along: IP messed up File Exts.
One of the earlier IP posts had a run command for deregistering iprepair.dll, which worked for me & I still haven't dl'd IP yet ( waiting on reports such as yours)
you could try emailing support@stardock.com

Thank you Bichur, you are probably right about changing to "IP messed up File Exts". I really can't be bothered writing to them.I have always had a faster response this way.

Well I don't know how if I knew I would fix it. IP 3 is the only program that I have installed and only because it had to be upgraded.I avoid installing software unless I really need it. Firstly it changed all my icons in the Quick Launch and made them all the same and it went on from there. When I click on these and want to have them changed to the originals it does show the Original icon but it doesn't want to change it. Now I have fixed most things but I do believe it has made problems with the Graphic Programs of PSP and GIMP.

Thank you Skinner Meowy. It is really a pain as I take extra care not to muck up things but one little click and it's all a fruit cake.

There have been quite a number of fairly extensive problems created with the newer builds of IP but it remains at SDC causing more and more problems with peoples computers, and not minor ones either. Why do they not revert to a stable build until the problems are resolved?

I don't use it any more at all. The last 2 times I did, I lost all my icons on the task bar. The only thing that would get them back was to restore. I hate to do that. I wasn't sure the first time it happened, but when it happened again, I knew. I know that is not like a major problem, but it was bad enough. At least it could be undone.

This found in the update History
[7/12/05 refresh] We've pulled the iprepair.dll from new distributions. There's
occasional problems being reported with it still. If you really want to attempt
to replace the folder icons in applications that are picking up the system-icons
in non-standard ways, email kwilas@stardock.com and I'll send you a copy of
the dll.
If you wish to disable an existing copy of it, Start / Run /
regsvr32.exe /u "c:\program files\stardock\object desktop\iconpackager\iprepair.dll"
3.00a release

Boss I think you have hit the nail on the head. I never would have thought that the update of SDC would be causing problems. And C do you mean to say you have uninstalled the SDC or the IP?
Sleeping Dragon
I can't thank you enough, that is a really extensive reply. I am very grateful for your help.
Guys thank you all very much, now decisions, decisions I am at my wits end at what to do should I uninstall the IP or SDC?

IP version 3.00a092 is now available through SDC, you should update that and see if it solves your problem.

What I copied and pasted is the comment on 3.00a092. They removed the iprepair. "There's

in non-standard ways, email kwilas@stardock.com and I'll send you a copy of

Tina, I have not uninstalled anything. I just dont use SDC anymore. I have been fortunate enough to have the time to read the threads and have not downloaded that version of IP, nor do I have the latest SDC. I have read too many complaints about them. After the last restore, I haven't used it. So far, so good. LYMSAG! DCB!
